We recommend at least 7 days in Costa Rica, so you have time for its wonders without rushing from place to place. 10 days lets you add a second region, and 14 gives you the Pacific coast and the Osa Peninsula at an easy pace. However many days you have, The Costa Rica Collection will build the stay around them.
Costa Rica is smaller than West Virginia. And yet, inside that compact space, you’ll find: cloud forest, two coastlines, active volcanoes, mangrove channels, waterfalls you can swim under, hanging bridges strung through the canopy, and a whale season.
So it’s no wonder that deciding how to fill your perfect Costa Rica itinerary, without crowding too much in, can feel overwhelming.
Of course, the classic itinerary exists for a reason: Arenal for the volcano and the hot springs. Monteverde for the cloud forest. Manuel Antonio for the monkeys. But there’s so much more to Costa Rica.
At The Costa Rica Collection, we’ve spent over a decade owning and managing luxury hotels and tour services. Our aim is to reconnect you with nature and foster authentic connections. We offer exhilarating experiences where you can actively engage in the enchantment.
Our concierge exists for exactly this: shaping your days so you see the wonders of this country without feeling like you did too much, or too little.
Furthermore, our four accommodations sit along the same stretch of Pacific coast, so with enough days you can stay at all four in one trip, and we’ll handle every move between them.
Below are sample itineraries at seven, ten and fourteen days, all of them built from expertly curated Costa Rica journeys. Treat every one as a starting point.

How many days do you need in Costa Rica?

If you’re wondering how many days you need in Costa Rica, we’d say seven at the least, so that nothing on your list has to be hurried. Ten gives you a second region at the same relaxed pace. Fourteen days gives you plenty of time to soak up even more of the wonders of Costa Rica.
One thing worth knowing early: Christmas, New Year and Easter fill up months ahead in Costa Rica, so if your dates land in those weeks, come to us early and we’ll get your villa and your guides booked while there’s still choice.
And if you have fewer than seven days, don’t let that deter you! Amarena Canvas Beach Hotel sits under two hours from San José, Costa Rica’s capital and the airport you’ll fly into, which makes it easy to reach with only a long weekend. You can land in the morning and be barefoot on Playa Hermosa by the afternoon. Not a bad use of a Tuesday!
The honest short answer to how many days to spend in Costa Rica is this: come for as long as you can get away. Nobody has ever finished a trip here and told us they wished they’d booked fewer days.
Is 7 days in Costa Rica enough?

7 days in Costa Rica is enough, and it makes a lovely trip.
There is plenty to do at our luxury hotels and lodges that you can stay at one or two places and avoid having to repack your bags and spend precious vacation time in transit. If you want to plan your Costa Rica vacation around spectacular accommodation, here are a few options that won’t disappoint:
Amarena Canvas Beach Hotel, on the Central Pacific
Experience luxury canvas beach tents, the only of their kind on one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches. Amarena sits at Playa Hermosa, between Jacó Beach and Esterillos, on a stretch where the waves run strong enough to host national surf competitions. Breakfast and a welcome drink come with the villa. It’s 94 km from the airport and 6 km from Jacó, which makes it our shortest transfer and our softest landing. Children are welcome.
Ojochal Gardens, in the village
Ojochal is a village with more good restaurants in it than its size explains, and Ojochal Gardens sits right in the middle, drive-up, no 4WD needed. Potz Restaurant and the Momento Wine & Sushi Bar are at the entrance, which means dinner is a walk and not a drive. Villas and suites, so you can size the stay to whoever’s coming, and Racquet Club access for the one person in the group who wants a tennis morning.
Oxygen Jungle Villas, above Uvita
The walls are glass and the view is canopy. You wake level with the treetops above Uvita with nothing between you and the rainforest but a pane. There’s a gorgeous infinity pool, a gourmet breakfast, and the Div Shum River Spa below the villas, where the only sound is the river. Adults only. This is the one guests book for an anniversary or a milestone, and the stay they always want to extend.
“The atmosphere is perfect for everyone looking to celebrate something or just mentally reset.”
- Jessica S, Oxygen Jungle Villas
Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, on the Osa
Perched above a palm-lined shore and wrapped in pristine rainforest, this is a rare sanctuary at the edge of the wild: a 189-acre private reserve bordered by more than 250,000 acres of national park and protected land. You arrive by boat because there is no other way in, ninety minutes out of Sierpe through mangrove channels or in from Drake Bay, and then the green opens and there’s a beach in front of you that belongs to the lodge. Two nights is the minimum and three is better.
Once you’re on it: multiple pools, your own stretch of sand, and an on-site dive centre that runs the boat out to Caño Island, where rays, turtles and reef sharks are what people come back up the beach talking about. Then Corcovado National Park itself, on foot with expert naturalist guides, tracking wildlife through ancient trails and vibrant canopies.
And then there are the tapirs, which come up onto the property for the mangoes, entirely on their own schedule. There’s more on what you may see on a guided walk if the Osa is what’s pulling you here.
If you’d rather mix and match, Oxygen Jungle Villas and Corcovado Wilderness Lodge make an incredible combination: the wonders of the southern coast on one trip, showcasing the canopy above Uvita and the wonders of Corcovado National Park, without either one feeling like an expedition. It’s a journey we already run as Coastal Wilds, at eight days, with Manuel Antonio and Nauyaca Waterfalls folded in.
If you’d like help matching a property to your week, which of our four hotels fits your trip compares them one by one.

A sample 14-day Costa Rica itinerary

If you have two weeks to explore Costa Rica, you can stop choosing. Fourteen days provides enough time to hop around a bit more, perfect if you want to experience all the highlights of Costa Rica.
Signature Circuit, 13 days
Four regions, and the only journey we run that asks you to move more than once. It opens on the Osa: two days in Corcovado National Park, then a day out at Caño Island.
Then north to Monteverde, where the cloud forest is strung with hanging bridges and the weather changes its mind hourly. Next is Arenal, for the volcano and the hot springs.
Then, on day ten, the Caribbean: different food, different music, an entirely different rhythm.
- Two days in Corcovado National Park
- A snorkelling day at Caño Island
- Monteverde: a cultural afternoon, a night walk, and a full day in the cloud forest on the hanging bridges
- Arenal: the volcano, the hot springs, the La Fortuna waterfall, and an adventure day with the zip line and the whitewater raft
- Three days on the Caribbean coast
- A leisure day built in on day nine, because by then you’ll want one
- Every transfer private
Clouds & Fire, 9 days
Clouds & Fire showcases Monteverde’s cloud forest, Arenal’s volcanic hot springs and the untamed Osa Peninsula in nine days. Add five days on the coast at the end at Oxygen Jungle Villas or Amarena to stay somewhere extraordinary.
- Monteverde’s cloud forest
- Arenal’s volcanic hot springs
- The untamed Osa Peninsula
- Five spare days, wherever you want to put them
So if two weeks in Costa Rica is what you have, plan your stay with us and we’ll shape it around your pace.
What is driving in Costa Rica like?

Driving in Costa Rica is beautiful, and slower than the map suggests. Both are worth planning around.
The coastal highway south from Jacó is a lovely road, ocean on one side and green hills on the other. Turn inland and it climbs, winds and changes surface, because the roads in Costa Rica that reach the best places are usually the slowest ones. Reckon on 60 kph on the main highways and 30 to 45 kph on rural routes, which means travel time here rarely matches the distance. Plan in half-days, not hours.
So should you rent a car?
If a Costa Rica road trip is the holiday you want, do it, and take the 4WD. Plenty of our guests drive themselves and love it. If it isn’t, we’ll arrange private transfers instead, and mountain roads, rain showers and navigating a foreign country stop being your problem. The leg between the coast and the Osa goes by boat either way, which turns the dullest hour of a Costa Rica trip into the one you photograph.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3 full days enough time in Costa Rica?
3 full days is enough time in Costa Rica for one base and one region, and it makes a fine short trip. Fly into San José and head to Amarena Canvas Beach Hotel.
Is 2 weeks in Costa Rica too much?
Two weeks in Costa Rica is a comfortable length, and it’s what Signature Circuit is built for at 13 days. You get four regions, an unhurried pace, and enough time in Costa Rica to spend a whole day doing nothing at all. Two weeks also leaves room for a spa day, a boat day, and one town you decide to skip.
How many days do you need at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge?
Two nights is the minimum at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, and three is the number we’d suggest. The boat takes an afternoon each way, so two nights gives you one full day on the trails and three gives you two. Guests who stay in Costa Rica on a longer trip often pair those nights with Ojochal Gardens.
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on what you want to see, because the dry months and the green months both make a case. Green months bring fuller rivers and waterfalls, and whale season on the southern Pacific.
Is there one ultimate Costa Rica itinerary?
The ultimate Costa Rica itinerary is the one shaped around your days, your pace and who’s coming with you. We suggest working with expert local travel planners who can help you design the perfect itinerary for your unique preferences while ensuring you stay at vetted luxury hotels.
